As part of the fantasy series I have made a piece inspired by each one of the four Hogwarts Houses.
I loved the Harry Potter universe as a child. The story really expanded my imagination in ways nothing else had and like so many other people it became a beloved part of my childhood. I really identified with the characters and imagining which house I would have been sorted into was so much fun as a kid. I know it is just a silly categorising system but I did feel that Hufflepuff suited me best. Which house would you have been sorted into?
When I decided I wanted to make Harry Potter inspired pieces I knew I wanted to use the houses and their common rooms as inspiration. The places students would call home and feel most themselves felt like a good match for affirmations and seeing the best in your life. I spent a long time thinking about what a person from each house might need to hear. Not what their house is known for and what attributes they might already identify with, but rather the ones they might struggle with.
Gryffindors are known for being courageous, brave and chivalrous. They are known for bravely stepping in and helping their loved ones whenever they are needed. They often put protecting others above their own desires. They need to be reminded that they are also important and they can use their bravery to go after what is important to them.
Having an object with you that reminds you to use your bravery not only in a selfless way but also to go after what you want, can be very encouraging.
For this reason I chose this affirmation for this piece.
"I am brave enough to live the life I want".
The multiple layers of enamel create a 3D effect and give the elusion of space that you can really feel. This token depicts a comfortably worn sofa in front of a roaring fire, light streaming in from the gloriously clear day outside. The kind of day that is perfect for quiddich. Perhaps the broom and bunting are from the last Gryffindor house cup win and did you notice the tiny sword of Gryffindor hiding behind all the celebratory bunting?
The enamel technique I use creates a stained glass effect and it therefore gets even more beautiful when you hold it up to the light.
Each of the large fantasy affirmation tokens is hand cut from 3 sheets of sterling silver and hand enamelled using glass vitreous enamels and the plique-à-jour technique. For more on vitreous enamels please see the FAQ's page.
